The Devil’s Tattoo by Nicole R. Taylor

Publication date:  September 1st 2013
Genre: Contemporary Romance 18+
Synopsis:
Zoe Granger picked up her first guitar the day her heart was smashed into a billion pieces. It was a way to keep her mind off her inevitable downward spiral, but music soon became her escape. She’s been burned too many times to tell and is just happy to coast through life, never putting herself out there. That’s until her best friend Dee suggests they start a band and suddenly she finds herself not just a part of it, but fronting the whole outfit.

They call themselves The Devil’s Tattoo and when they release their debut EP, it rockets to the top of the charts and it’s like an overnight fairytale. Contracts, photo shoots, royalties and interviews are heaped onto the shy Zoe and it’s like she’s finally found her place. Then comes the phone call that changes everything. They’ve been asked to co-headline a tour with one of the hottest bands of the moment, The Stabs and Zoe will never be the same again.

Will Strickland is one fourth of the hottest indie rock band to ever grace the airwaves. He’s the bass player in The Stabs, hot as hell and could have his pick of any girl that flings herself at him. But he’s only got eyes for Zoe and she has no idea why he’d bother. She’s got one hell of a trust issue and an attitude to boot and Will seems to be the one who wants to tame her, but is he game enough?

The Devil’s Tattoo and The Stabs go on the road and it’s either going to be a highway to hell or a stairway to heaven. Only time will tell who will come out on top and Zoe’s determined to do it without getting her heart broken… again.

This book took me on a slow, sweet journey with two fantastically written characters who are both consumed by the insecurities and deep fears from their own pasts.

The Devil’s Tattoo tells the story of Zoe Granger, a young woman who seeks solace in music and writing. It is one night while she is out that her gaze collides with the gorgeous Will Strickland. From the moment that Will sees Zoe, he is instantly drawn to her and as the two are thrown together by a cause of events, his determination to capture her heart is strong. But Zoe is a woman who has had a detrimental event shape her life. She fears she does not have the capacity to let someone in. As these two spend more time together, their feelings become harder to deny, but they both share secrets from their past. Secrets that they are determined to leave buried.

Will is an incredibly gorgeous and somewhat sensitive character. His reputation is a major setback in allowing Zoe to acknowledge her growing feelings and provides the reader with a great amount of angst as these two are continuously faced with setbacks. Portrayed as a player and someone Zoe is not ready to allow into her heart, the author allows you to explore both of these characters inner thoughts through the dual POV.

Zoe is a timid and broken heroine, yet she is one who exudes a great amount of inner strength. Whilst reading her perspective on certain situations within the plot, you cannot help but feel a great sense of empathy towards her issues of trust, due to the horrible experience she has faced.

It was amazing to see my home city portrayed within this book, and I loved that Melbourne was just as much a character as well as Australia, rather than just a mere setting within The Devil’s Tattoo.

I also loved that Will was a male protagonist who  was conveyed as a sensitive, and gracious guy who understood the depth of his strong feelings toward Zoe instantly. In contrast Nicole R. Taylor creates a strong heroine who is the one consumed by apprehension within their growing relationship. It was this factor that truly made this book a refreshing and unique take on a rock star romance.

This is  one of those books where the secondary characters capture your heart just as much as the hero and heroine do. Dee in particular was such an entertaining and enthralling character. I am so excited to read the next instalment in the series The Fire Walker, releasing in December – which will be his story.

This was a highly enjoyable and engaging tale of the complications that ensue from love, the instantaneous connections we can experience and the fears that can control one’s life if one allows them to.

A highly enjoyable and beautiful book that I highly recommend.
