Beat of the Heart (Runaway Train #2) By Katie Ashley
After years of bad relationships and a cheating ex-fiancé, twenty-eight-year-old Mia Martinelli prefers healing her patients’ hearts on the Cardiac Care floor rather than risking having her heart broken again. But that all comes to a screeching halt when caring for the head roadie for Runaway Train puts her into the orbit of drummer and Latin Lover, AJ Resendiz. After a scorching weekend of steamy passion, Mia’s intention of getting out with her heart unscathed is challenged by the stud with the wicked sense of humor, especially when he wants to continue seeing her. But when the harsh reality of AJ’s hoard of female admirers sends her insecurities into overdrive, Mia bails, leaving him handcuffed to his bathroom shower.
AJ never imagined that after two weeks of the best sex and female companionship he’d ever experienced, he would need rescued by his band mates from his shower prison. Although he tries to forget the sensual brunette whose curves made his mouth water, AJ can’t get her out of his mind…or his heart. Months later when he finally seeks Mia for answers as to why she left, nothing could prepare him for their life-altering reunion.
Can AJ prove to Mia that regardless of the women after his body, his heart belongs only to her?

Beat of the Heart is the second instalment in the Runaway Train Series and explores the very gorgeously seductive, AJ Resendiz’s story.
I must say that I completely fell in love with AJ in Music of the Heart. This gorgeous Latin lover’s emotive side is so palpable, as is his kind, genuine nature and hidden desire to find someone to love.
When AJ first locks eyes on Mia, he is instantly enamoured with her and as these two embark on a tumultuous affair in the hopes to quench the strong desire between them, they realise that the time they shared has done nothing more but reinforce their growing feelings for one another. But when deep insecurities and events from their pasts continuously get in their way and threaten to push them apart, will they be able to fight for their relationship?
Mia Martinelli is the stunning, twenty-eight year old nurse, whose sweet kindness attracts AJ and instantly draws her to him. She is a woman who has had her heart broken twice in devastatingly cruel ways, and also a woman who never knew the love of her mother, forcing her to protect her heart relentlessly. She is also such a refreshing heroine in that she exudes strength and rebels against dominance. Her fiery, hot-headed Italian nature forces her to constantly challenge AJ, but what I loved was the ways in which both of these characters challenged and pushed the other to their limit.
AJ’s is still the gorgeous, kind hearted Drummer of Runaway Train that we met previously. He is also a man who is looking for a good time this time around. After his realisation that he falls too deeply with the women from his past, he instantly tries to protect his heart from Mia.
It is the deep attraction and challenge that Mia presents that drives him in his ruthless pursuit to attain her. But once he finally gets a glimpse into who Mia truly is, he realises that perhaps he has found the one woman he has been looking for.
In true Katie Ashley fashion she has created two characters that have such strong chemistry. This is not just a smooth sailing tale of intense and all consuming love though, but a tale of two individuals who have suffered heartbreak and are constantly thrown into a rollercoaster of tumultuous events. It explores how one’s insecurities can threaten their future and is a somewhat realistic portrayal of the unpredictability of love.
While I would have loved a little more angst to make my heart race, Katie Ashley has yet again created a devastatingly sexy romance that instantly ties you in knots, as you follow these two gorgeous characters that constantly push one another and evoke such intense passion.
