What does it take to rise from life’s depths, swim against the current, and breathe?
Weighted down by the loss of her parents, Blythe McGuire struggles to keep her head above water as she trudges through her last year at Matthews College. Then a chance meeting sends Blythe crashing into something she doesn’t expect—an undeniable attraction to a dark-haired senior named Chris Shepherd, whose past may be even more complicated than her own. As their relationship deepens, Chris pulls Blythe out of the stupor she’s been in since the night a fire took half her family. She begins to heal, and even, haltingly, to love this guy who helps her find new paths to pleasure and self-discovery. But as Blythe moves into calmer waters, she realizes Chris is the one still strangled by his family’s traumatic history. As dark currents threaten to pull him under, Blythe may be the only person who can keep him from drowning.
Blythe McGuire has been struggling with life after the death of her parents. Attending Matthews College, she is alone and isolated, her only companion is the guilt and melancholy which haunts her every day. When a chance encounter with the incredibly gorgeous and enigmatic Christopher Shepherd occurs one morning, Blythe begins to feel. Something she had long thought that she would never be able to do again. As the two begin to spend time together and with Chris’ adorable and endearing siblings, Chris helps Blythe mend the broken pieces of her existence and finally heal from her past. While sharing some very passionate and heated moments, the attraction deepens between the two, and Blythe begins to fall in love with this incredible young man whom she has an undeniable connection with. Blythe suddenly has a family within Chris and every day spent with him continually saves her. They both bare the physical scars of their pasts, but when Blythe discovers that Chris harbours deep emotional scars, she realises that he needs saving too and finds it difficult to break down the walls around his heart and keep him above water.
Left Drowning is the exploration of two characters who have suffered heartbreaking emotional traumas within their lives and the forgiveness, solace and love they find from and within one another. From the moment I began Left Drowning, I just felt as though there was something special about this book and I was instantly captivated. I laughed at the craziness of Shepherd siblings, and was teary at the descriptions of what each of these characters had suffered through in their own unique way. This is a heartbreaking and endearing story and one of the best books I have read this year. It is one of those stories you will not be able to forget and Chris is one of the most passionate, sweet, and sensual characters I have read.
There are scenes where the passion and the level of love these two characters share is so intense it is almost palpable, and you can sense with clarity Chris and Blythe’s transition from mere friends to lovers as they become each other’s lifelines. You also know that you are reading the work of an incredible author when you do not merely skim over the secondary characters, but actually crave to know every detail about each of them because it adds immensely to the story. That is what the chaotic Shepherd siblings do; they add another dimension to this incredible story.
It is incredibly difficult to express just how beautifully written and unique Left Drowning is, and the way in which it evokes such chaotic and intense emotions whilst reading it. It is truly a stunning book that left me both laughing and in tears from the beginning to the very end. There really are not enough stars to rate this book that do it justice.
